The Science and Technology behind Aquakleen Filters

The main component of this type of Aquakleen domestic filters is active carbon, a stable, inert, and extremely porous material, obtained from materials with a high carbon content, such as coal or vegetable products.

It is known that in ancient times graphite was used to filter drinking water in India, and that charred wood was used as a medical adsorbent in ancient Egypt. It is believed that in AD 400 Hippocrates recommended filtering the drinking water with coal. Since the 1930s it has been used to eliminate the taste and odor of water and to this day, active carbon has been extensively used in many industries such as Aquakleen filters, to remove or recover organic compounds such as dyes or solvents from the water or to purify the air, as well as in the water treatment plants where active carbon beds are used for the purification of urban water supply.

In Aquakleen filters, active carbon obtained from coal or anthracite-type coal is usually used, although there are also domestic activated carbon filters made from coconut shells. Aquakleen filters utilize multi-stage refinement. Due to the use of active carbon in large quantities for industrial processes of refining, purification or filtration, as well as in the potabilization of water, alternatives have been developed to the use of mineral coal which are often renewable materials that would be a residue, such as coconut, wood fibers or fruit bones. In Aquakleen filters, the "activation" of the material is achieved by exposing the raw material to high temperatures and water vapor. This process creates a very high porosity structure and tiny channels, which translate into a large internal surface of positive charge. The effective surface area can be up to 1,400 m2 per gram of active carbon. The phenomenon by which the material attracts and retains undesired particles is the physical phenomenon of adsorption. Aquakleen filters use this process and pairs it with technology developed by NASA. The surface of the active carbon is non-polar and therefore retains the most hydrophobic elements with the most affinity for carbon, i.e. especially the organic molecules. As the number of free pores is limited, the cavities are saturated until there comes a time when the filter is no longer effective. Since the particles are retained by a surface phenomenon caused by weak physical forces, adsorption is possible to be reversible, usually by thermal desorption, applying heat and pressure, as is usually done at the industrial level. In Aquakleen filters, the active carbon is usually in the form of granular activated carbon (CAG), i.e. formed by particles the size of the grains of sand, and installed inside a plastic or stainless steel housing. Other Aquakleen filters utilize an exclusive three tank system. Typically, prior to the Aquakleen filters, a polypropylene filter cloth is available to remove possible solids in suspension of larger diameter, thus reducing the load on the Aquakleen filters.

On the other hand, the Aquakleen filters usually also incorporate ion exchange resins. In some systems, for example, the granular activated carbon filter is added to a formula with zinc and copper, an alloy known as KDF that improves the Aquakleen filter performance. The formula causes oxidation of some chemicals and their passage to non-harmful forms. These are filtered or simply follow their way into the water as harmless salts, for example as happens with chlorine, which happens to chloride or zinc chloride. The KDF complex also generates a very low current (on the order of 0.04 volts) which acts as a magnet to permanently attract particles such as heavy metals. It is an additional Aquakleen filter reinforcement, since it eliminates part of the contaminants, leaving more capacity to the Aquakleen filters to retain other pollutants or those that have been able to escape to the complex, thus increasing the capacity of the filter, both in the amount of retained substances and in its duration. Exposure to high amounts of chlorine daily is not without suspicion as to possible harmful effects. First, the ingestion of certain doses of chlorine is related to a higher incidence of colon and bladder cancer.
